<description><![CDATA[<div id='news-id-1377'>Vitamin E in Heart Disease - Previous findings<br /><br />Numerous preliminary and observational studies have looked at the role and benefits of Vitamin E supplements in heart disease. Some previous studies, such as the Nurse Study in 1993 involving 90,000 nurses, associated Vitamin E supplements to lower rate of coronary heart disease by 30 - 40%. Another observational study in Finland involving over 5000 people also suggested that Vitamin E supplements was associated with lower death rate from heart disease.<br /><br />Vitamin E in Heart Disease - New findings<br /><br />Until recently, a few randomized clinical studies could not confirm the role of Vitamin E supplements in heart disease prevention. A large-scale trial The Heart Outcomes Prevention Evaluation (HOPE) Study followed 95,000 patients for 4.5 years who were at high risk for heart attack or stroke. In this clinical trial, patients who received 400 IU of vitamin E daily did not experience significantly fewer cardiovascular events or hospitalizations for heart failure or chest pain when compared to those who received the placebo.</div>]]></description>

The edge. In elite competition, it's the difference between first and fifth place. In the gym, it's the difference between 8 reps and 10 reps with the same weight. In the real world, it can be the difference between merely looking "fit" and looking hyper-muscular and lean.<br />

Battlefield warriors, the ancestors of modern athletes, were some of the first to use performance-enhancing substances to get the edge over their enemies. The gladiators of Greece would take potentially lethal stimulants such as strychnine before entering the arena. Norse warriors known as Berserkers would ingest psychoactive compounds and rage into battle in a bloodletting trance.<br />
<br />
The use of performance-enhancing substances is as long as the history of sport itself. Cyclists in the 1800's used something they called trimethyl&nbsp; which, believe it or not, was a combination of alcohol, strychnine, heroin, caffeine, and cocaine and sometimes died from it. In the 1930's, amphetamines became widely popular. In fact, heroin and cocaine were openly used in sports until they were first classified as prescription drugs and later as illicit substances.</div>]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<div id='news-id-1347'>Written by Anne Rueter    <br />Sunday, 27 January 2008<br /><br />ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Block the action of a protein that normally regulates muscle mass, and watch your muscles grow.<br /><br />That may sound like a good idea to people with muscle-wasting diseases such as muscular dystrophy, and to older people, whose muscles naturally get smaller and weaker with age. Drugs that restrict the protein myostatin, which normally prevents muscles from being overly bulky, are currently under study, but not on the market, for some medical conditions.<br /><br />Such drugs, called myostatin inhibitors, also are stirring interest among body builders and athletes. There are already signs of a nascent black market for what might become another illegal performance-enhancing drug in organized sports.<br /><br />Now, a new University of Michigan study in mice suggests that while myostatin inhibitors may indeed bulk up muscles, they may also bring a troubling side effect - small, brittle tendons that could make muscle injuries more likely.</div>]]></description>

Are They Really Nutritious?<br /><br />With the growing concern for proper health and nutrition, some have supplemented their diets with nutrition bars. Some have even replaced meals with nutrition bars. But new information suggests you're not really eating healthy by including a nutrition bar in your diet.<br /><br />Most nutrition bars on the market today are either mislabeled or contain less healthy nutrition than a McDonald's Big Mac Nutrition bars first began as modified snack bars. Consumers bought these first bars simply because they were labeled 'nutrition' bars. Unfortunately, these bars were no better than a regular snack bar.<br /><br />Many nutrition bars' labels can be misleading. A recent independent study by ConsumerLab.com found that 18 of 31 nutrition bars sampled did not contain the levels of ingredients that the labels claimed, the biggest issue being the mislabeling of carbohydrates. Many bars contain far more carbohydrates than indicated on the label because many manufacturers do not include glycerin in the total carbohydrate counts. Glycerin is a carbohydrate metabolite that keeps bars moist, adds bulk and provides texture. Some research has suggested that glycerin may not be fully metabolized by the body, and many bar manufacturers exclude glycerin in the total carbohydrate count.</div>]]></description>
