Former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski will make his professional boxing debut in two months, and the legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach says he expects Arlovski to impress. Roach told me Tuesday that Golden Boy Promotions has signed Arlovski for a six-round fight on its June 27 show. No opponent has been determined, but Roach said that whoever it is, he thinks Arlovski will be ready to show off his punching power. "Andrei is going to be aggressive, using his strength and his reach advantage and his height," Roach said. "He's going to be aggressive and looking for a knockout." Roach said that Arlovski is ready to turn his attention to boxing after he suffered a first-round knockout loss in his January MMA fight against Fedor Emelianenko. |

The mixed martial arts community lost one of its biggest personalities early Wednesday morning in a car crash in Costa Mesa, Calif. Charles "Mask" Lewis, the 45-year-old co-founder of the TapouT apparel company, died when he lost control of his Ferrari and hit a lamp pole. Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene. In a statement on its Web site, TapouT said, "It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we must regretfully confirm the passing of our beloved friend, brother and co-founder Charles 'Mask' Lewis following a car accident that occurred last night. ... Many thanks to all for the outpouring of blessings and well-wishes during this incredibly difficult time." The Los Angeles Times reported that a Newport Beach Police Department officer witnessed the crash and saw Lewis' red Ferrari and a white Porsche spinning out of control just before 1 a.m. Wednesday. The Ferrari then hit the curb and collided into a pole. "It was terrible," Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox told the Times. "It was extensive damage to the vehicle." A woman in the Ferrari was ejected from the vehicle and was in stable condition at a local hospital. Police haven't determined if she was the driver or passenger of the Ferrari, according to the Times. |

Feds raid lab of ex-BALCO chemist By Josh Peter Yahoo Sports PageFederal agents raided a company led by the chemist who was at the center of the BALCO steroids scandal and linked to a recent positive drug test by a major-league pitcher, Yahoo! Sports has learned. Patrick Arnold, who created The Clear a drug distributed through the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative to disgraced sprint queen Marion Jones and other high-profile athletes leads ErgoPharm Inc., the company raided Wednesday in Champaign, Ill. Agents for the Drug Enforcement Administration executed a document warrant at the company. No arrests were made, officials familiar with the action said. DEA agents from the Chicago headquarters carried out the raid with assistance from the Champaign police department, spokesmen from both agencies confirmed. The case originated with the DEA offices in Boston, spokesmen from the other agencies said. Anything to do with that is under seal, so Im not going to be able to talk about it, said Tony Pettigrew, public information officer for the DEA headquarters in Boston. Pettigrew referred all questions to U.S. Attorneys office in New Hampshire. Requests for comment from the U.S. Attorneys office in New Hampshire were not immediately returned. A spokesman for the DEA headquarters in Washington, also declined comment. Attempts to reach officials at ErgoPharm were unsuccessful. J.C. Romero, a relief pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, was suspended earlier this month for the first 50 games of next season after testing positive for androstenedione better known as andro used by Mark McGwire in the 1990s. Federal law classifies andro as an anabolic steroid that is believed to increase testosterone levels. Arnold was the first to manufacture androstenedione and bring it to the market. Romero blamed his positive test on 6-OXO, a supplement developed by Arnolds company and touted by ErgoPharms website as the new gold standard for testosterone elevation. Arnold pleaded guilty in 2006 to one count of conspiracy to distribute steroids as part of the federal prosecution of BALCO. He was sentenced to three months in prison and three months home confinement. |

Dennis James out of 2009 Australia Pro Show March 11, 2009 Dennis James has withdrawn from the 2009 Australia Pro Show due to illness [bronchitis] after recently placing 7th at the Arnold Classic last weekend. Dennis competed at the Australian Grand Prix once before - in 2001 taking 2nd to Chris Cormier. Flex reports: I have bronchitis and if I dont take care of it the next step is pneumonia. Those are the words of veteran IFBB pro Dennis James, who has decided not to compete in the Australia Pro Championships as originally planned, using discretion as the better part of valor. Of course I want to compete, James avers, but Ive had pneumonia twice already, so I didnt want to take any chances. If this were to go into my lungs it could develop into pneumonia. So Im on antibiotics now. James says he actually competed in the 09 Arnold Classic with bronchitis but that it didnt affect his preparation and that he was happy with the level of conditioning he brought to Columbus. I feel like it was the best shape Ive been in for a long time - maybe not my best ever, but not far from it, he states. The Menace hasnt yet decided when hell step back onstage but confirms, Im not done yet. Looking at the expected lineup, Dennis would most likely have been top 5 or higher. With Lee Priests earlier withdrawal, this is the second high profile loss for the Aussie pro show, however with Arnold Classic winner Kai Green, Toney Freeman, Silvio Samuel and others the lineup is still excellent.

2009 IFBB Joe Weider Pro World Cup Bodybuilding Championships Postponed
On Wednesday, American Media, Inc. (AMI) and the IFBB Professional League announced the debut of Joe Weiders Pro World Cup in Berlin, Germany will be postponed until 2010.
"Since taking over Weider Publications and Joe Weiders Olympia Weekend in 2004, AMI has been dedicated to expanding bodybuilding not only in the United States, but across the world," AMI Chairman, President and CEO David Pecker said. "Our intention in launching Joe Weiders Pro World Cup is to continue those efforts by hosting an event on par with the biggest and best in the United States."
"Unfortunately, due to the current economic conditions in both America and Europe, it became increasingly apparent that matching the high standards we set every year with Olympia Weekend would be an extremely difficult task. As such, we will be postponing the inaugural Pro World Cup until 2010 in order to ensure that we will be giving the European fans the best possible bodybuilding experience."
In 2010, Joe Weiders Pro World Cup will be held at Messe Berlin in Berlin, Germany on October 6-10, two weeks after Olympia Weekend. As originally planned, the weekend will include the European Pro Championships, a Powerlifting Supershow, a European FLEX Bikini Model Search and a Superstar Seminar. |
